A dental sealant is a strong and protective material that bonds to your child’s back teeth to protect them from harmful cavities and infections. This coating is applied over the chewing surface of the tooth (on the back teeth over deep pits and grooves) to seal out food debris and plaque buildup. Sealants can act as a barrier against plaque and acids, keeping your child’s teeth strong and healthy. This treatment can also make it easier for your child to maintain the cleanliness of their teeth as they brush and floss.
We recommend sealants for children once their permanent molars emerge, often around 6 to 12 years old. Most dental sealants can last for several years, however these sealants may need to be re-applied over time. Sealants involve a simple and quick application process and can often be completed during regular checkups with our dentist.
